Cookie policy

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. Related technologies, including local storage, do a similar job without being cookies in the strict sense. This policy covers both, and applies to nimbletcuriousvault.boats, published by Kilnhouse Editorial Limited, 27 Bellfinnan Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow G31 3RQ, United Kingdom.

We group storage into three categories: essential, analytics and functional. Essential storage is used because the site cannot work properly without it. Analytics and functional storage are optional and are used only if you consent through the banner.

Your choice

When you first arrive, the banner at the foot of the page offers three options: accept all categories, reject everything that is not essential, or open preferences and decide category by category. Your answer is recorded in your browser so that the banner does not reappear on every page. To change it, clear this site's cookies and site data in your browser and reload the page; the banner will return and you can answer again.

Categories in use

CategoryPurposeSet byTypical duration
Essential — consent recordStores which cookie option you chose so the banner is not shown againThis site (first party, local storage)Until you clear site data
Essential — session and securityKeeps requests working, supports load balancing and helps block abusive trafficThis site and our hosting providerSession, or a short period
Analytics — page measurementCounts page views and the routes visitors take between pages, in aggregateOur analytics provider, loaded only after consentUp to two years unless cleared sooner
Functional — display preferencesRemembers interface choices such as a dismissed notice or a preferred display optionThis site (first party)Up to one year

Essential storage is used on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating a working and secure website, as permitted by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. Analytics and functional storage are used only on the basis of your consent, which you may withdraw at any time.

What we do not do

We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels or cross-site tracking. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising purposes. We do not embed social media widgets that set cookies on our pages. Where an analytics provider is used, it is configured for aggregate reporting rather than individual profiling.

Blocking cookies in your browser

Every mainstream browser lets you block or delete cookies and site data, either for all sites or for individual ones. The controls are usually found under settings for privacy, security or site data, and the relevant sections are named "Cookies and site permissions" in Microsoft Edge, "Privacy and security" in Google Chrome, "Cookies and Site Data" in Mozilla Firefox, and "Privacy" in Safari, with an equivalent option under Settings on mobile versions. Browsers also offer private or incognito windows that discard storage when the window closes.

Blocking all cookies and storage is your right, and this site will still display and be readable. The practical consequence is that your cookie choice cannot be remembered, so the banner will appear on each visit.

Cookies set by other organisations

Our pages do not embed third-party media players, maps or social feeds, so third-party storage is limited to the providers described in the table above. If we add an embedded service in future, this policy will be updated to name the category and purpose before the service is used.

More information

How we handle personal data more generally, including the legal bases we rely on and your rights of access, correction, erasure and objection, is set out in our privacy policy. The Information Commissioner's Office publishes plain-language guidance on cookies and online tracking for people in the United Kingdom.

Questions about this policy can be sent to [email protected] or to the postal address above. We answer cookie and data questions from the same editorial inbox as everything else, so please say in the subject line that it is a privacy matter.
